What are Submodalities

Submodalities are the finer distinctions of the modalities (Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic). They are the fundamental building blocks—the "programming language"—of our internal representations. Changing the submodalities of a memory or thought instantly changes the meaning and emotional impact of that experience.

The Programming Language of the Mind

Every internal picture, sound, or feeling has specific qualities. Is the picture bright or dim? Large or small? Is the sound loud or quiet? From a distance or close by? These are submodalities.

Speed and the Driver

When working with submodalities, speed is essential for keeping the unconscious mind engaged. More importantly, we look for the "Driver"—the specific submodality that, when changed, automatically carries all other submodalities with it.
