What is a State?

A State is a combination of an internal representation (the thoughts, images, and sounds in your mind) and the internal kinaesthetic feeling (the sensations in your body) that goes with it.

We often describe these states with labels such as ‘alert’, ‘sleepy’, ‘sad’, ‘cheerful’, ‘depressed’, or ‘happy’. However, in NLP, we look past the label to the structure of the state.

Your internal representation creates the state you are in, and the state leads to your behavior. Crucially, changing your physiology (your posture, breathing, or movement) will also result in a change of state. Being in control of your state means you are in control of your results.
