What is Overlap?

Overlap is the process of leading someone from their preferred representation system to a less preferred representation system. This is a powerful tool for helping people who feel "stuck" in one way of thinking or who have difficulty accessing certain senses (like mental imagery).

Example: A client says, “I can’t do pictures.”

You might respond using overlap: “Ok, Imagine you are standing on a beach, and feel the sand against your feet, hear the water lapping against the shore, listen to the birds overhead, and now look up, and notice if you can now, imagine you can see the birds.”

By starting with the senses they can easily access (Kinaesthetic and Auditory), you create a bridge to the Visual system, allowing for a more expanded internal experience.
